The ATBC has recently acquired a MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D printer. The MakerBot Replicator is capable of printing 3D structures made of a bio-renewable, biodegradable material called polylactic acid (PLA). This 3D printer will advance the missions of the ATBC by providing a rapid means of making custom tools, parts and devices for use in our tissue fabrication research as well as serve as an educational tool for students including those participating in the Tissue Engineering and Biofabrication research experience for undergraduates (REU) program to be offered in the summer of 2013.
|Jan 9, 2013||Dr. Scott Argraves received notice of award from NSF SC EPSCoR/IDeA for funding of the summer undergraduate research program entitled "MUSC REU in Tissue Engineering and Biofabrication". This award provides funds to support five South Carolina undergraduate students (i.e., stipends, travel, subsistence, materials and supplies) to participate in a 10 week mentor-guided research program at MUSC during the summer of 2013. This experience will give students training in laboratory research practices and provide a general educational experience as well as a more focused exposure to tissue engineering and biofabrication disciplines. It is expected that the REU program will be a positive and guiding educational experience for South Carolina students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).|

The tour was hosted by Dr. Scott Argraves and the students had the opportunity to observe the Palmetto bioprinter being operated by Dr. Thomas Trusk.|

|June 4, 2012||Tour of the ATBC by Winthrop Math REU Group (Hosted by Dr. Argraves).
On June 4th the SC INBRE-supported MUSC Proteogenomics Facility (Dr. Scott Argraves, Director; Dr. Jeremy Barth, Associate Director) hosted a visit by participants in the Winthrop Math Research Experience for Undergraduates program (REU, Dr. Joe Rusinko, Director). The Winthrop REU group visited MUSC to get background information and establish contacts that might help with their summer project, which involved mathematical modeling of tumor growth. With the assistance of Dr. Betsy Hill (MUSC, Biostatistics and Epidemiology) and supporting funds from SC INBRE, Proteogenomics personnel organized an afternoon of tours and lectures for the REU visitors. This included presentations in cancer biology, biostatistics and systems biology, and tours of the Proteogenomics Facility, the Advanced Tissue Biofabrication Center, and several laboratories participating in relevant research areas.

|August 2011||Dr. Bill Mondy (Claflin Univ.) installed the Centers first bioprinter, a Spheroid Positioner & Cell/Gel Sprayer. Dr. Mondy recently completed beta-testing the Bioprinter at the Renato Archer Center for Information Technology in Campinas, Brazil, and will continue research into development of a CAD blueprint for an authentic intra-organ branched vascular tree, an important thrust of the SC Project.|
